As the summer recruiting season recently got underway, the University of Utah welcomed a handful of talented recruits this past weekend, which included four-star wide receiver David Washington. Following the visit, the Las Vegas native shared his thoughts on the trip and what an offer from the reigning Pac-12 Champions means to him and several other details from his time in Salt Lake City.
“It was great,” said Washington. “Overall, the hospitality, the people, the information we received was great and it was amazing. I was with the players a lot of the time and that gave me an opportunity to ask them a lot of questions, to see where they are at with things and where the chemistry is with the team…They really gave me that guide early and showed me this could be where you are balling at.”
In addition to spending time with a number of players and other recruits, Washington also had an opportunity to meet with head coach Kyle Whittingham and wide receivers coach Alvis Whitted. While they were able to discuss a number of topics, Washington shared that he’s been able to really connect with both coaches, especially Whitted who has been the primary contact during his recruitment.
“Coach Whittingham and I hit it off,” Washington said. “It was a very personable conversation. We hit on every topic.”
“After Coach Bumphis left, there was no bump in the road. Everything transitioned over to Coach Whitted coming from Wisconsin. He started recruiting me the same way and showed the same amount of love,” continued Washington.
Having been on Utah’s radar for some time, the program is high on Washington’s list as they check most of the boxes. One thing in particular is the way Utah has handled themselves over the past few seasons and how they’ve dominated the Pac-12.
“They [Utah] just have the ability to win. They’re going to play good football, they’re going to play violent football, and they’re going to win. That’s what I want to be a part of,” said Washington.
In terms of his position, the talented receiver also feels like he’d be a great fit for the offense and considers how heavily they use tight ends as an opportunity for him rather than a hindrance.
“I feel like the offense is really good at drawing mismatches and putting guys one-on-one,” said Washington. “A lot of people say that Utah moves the tight ends around a lot. I see that as an opportunity as well. The more tight ends in the box, the more people that have to cover that which leaves opportunity for one-on-one situations, which I like.”
As Washington plans to make a decision by Mid-July, he is primarily focused on playing in the Pac-12. He’s had visits with UCLA, Oregon State and will visit with Cal in the coming weeks. Ole Miss is also under consideration, but the four-star wide receiver from Las Vegas is set on remaining in the west.
