The Runnin’ Utes have begun to make momentum with their recruiting by way of the NCAA Transfer Portal. On Friday, it was the past relationship with Utah assistant Chris Burgess that landed an intriguing forward prospect, Jake Wahlin.

A one-time BYU commit for the 2021 class, Wahlin committed to the Cougars and then went on a LDS mission. Before he returned, Burgess, his key recruiter at BYU, accepted a job with the Utes.

Now fresh off of his mission, Wahlin visited Utah on Wednesday before going public with his decision:

What Utah is getting

A 6-foot-7 sharpshooter out of Timpview HS, Wahlin grew two inches on his mission and now stands at 6-foot-9. He provides Utah an intriguing size advantage and should be able to guard 3-4 positions.

During the offseason, it’s been important for Utah to add size, shooting, and athleticism. Wahlin checks at least two boxes and the hope is that his athleticism remains despite his recent growth spurt.

Imagine a lineup at times with a 6-foot-9 Wahlin at small forward, a 7-foot Branden Carlson at power forward, a 7-foot-1 Lawson Lovering at center.

That can cause a lot of problems for opponents.

What this means for the class

Wahlin joins point guard Deivon Smith, wing Cole Bajema, center Lawson Lovering and guard Hunter Erickson who have already signed with Utah. The Runnin’ Utes now technically have two open scholarships. However, with Branden Carlson not being invited to the NBA Combine, he’s expected to be back. Utah can now take a “best player available” approach and look to add either athleticism or shooting.
