WHAT IT MEANS: CB Stokes Jr. is a Ute

The University of Utah received another commitment over the weekend from Jason Stokes Jr. The cornerback from Weiss HS in Pflugerville, TX visited LSU recently and after a strong push from the Tigers, Stokes decided to commit to Utah.

Stokes Jr. holds over 20 offers, including Utah, LSU, Arizona, Arkansas, Houston, TCU, and Texas Tech. The lockdown defender visited Utah on June 7th, and he also visited TCU, LSU, Arizona and Texas Tech. After visiting LSU this last weekend, the Tigers made a strong push, but Utah cornerbacks coach Sharrieff Shah was able to LDU off.

Stokes Jr. made his announcement on social media:

What Utah is Getting

At 6-foot-3, Stokes Jr. already has tremendous length for the position and the size to compete with the biggest receivers. The main concern in a cornerback at his height is if he’s fluid enough in his hips to change direction. Time will tell, as he adds weight, if he can stay quick enough to play corner at the college level. Stokes’ experience as a receiver should help with his defensive IQ.

Another nice attribute of Stokes is his willingness to be physical in run support, making him an already well-rounded defensive back. If he can continue to develop flexibility in his hips, he could be one of the next great Utah cornerbacks.

What This Means for the Class

Stokes Jr. is the twelfth commitment for the 2025 class. He joins offensive lineman Milz Asiata, athlete JJ Buchanan, offensive lineman Soren Shinofield, linebacker/edge rusher Max Fonoimoana, tight end Drew Clemens, linebacker Christian Thatcher, defensive lineman Karson Kaufusi, defensive tackle Sione Motuapuaka, quarterback Wyatt Becker, as well as defensive end Nela Tupou in the 2025 class.

Heading into the 2025 season, Utah will be looking to replace both Zemaiah Vaughn and grad transfer Kenan Johnson.
