Rivals Top 250 (no. 161 overall) Peter Costelli
Rivals Top 250 (no. 161 overall) Peter Costelli

Utah landed a commitment from four-star quarterback Peter Costelli out of Mission Viejo (Calif.) Saturday afternoon and it’s safe to say he's 100% committed to the Utes. This talented gunslinger sures up the quarterback position in the 2021 class and is a tremendous addition for Head Coach Whittingham and staff.

Costelli went in-depth on what made him choose the Utes in the end, “They’ve been with me from the very beginning, even back when I was at SM (Santa Margarita HS) they started looking at me. After I transferred they ended up offering me so it’s been very cool they have been looking at me for a very long time now” he said. He also added, “It’s a real family environment over there. The coaches really treat you like family and I see myself really fitting perfectly into the team as well as the offense.” This was somewhere Costelli felt he can really fit and be comfortable for four years.

There were also some more factors that really stood out about his decision to choose Utah, “ The football energy at the school is also really cool to see because not a lot of Pac-12 schools have that energy like that at a game.” The Utah fan base certainly stood out to the talented signal caller on his unofficial trip to Utah last fall.

His relationship with quarterbacks coach Andy Ludwig and head coach Kyle Whittingham should really excite Utah fans, “I have a really good relationship with them we talk a good amount and it was pretty cool when I went over there for a visit. We were able to talk a lot about the offense” he said. “I have a really good relationship with Head Coach Whittingham, I was just really excited I was able to call him up and they were really fired up about me committing.” Utah was able to snag in one of the most highly touted signal callers out West and according to the Rivals rankings, he's listed as the number nine overall pro-style quarterback in the country.

There were certainly some other finalists of in Costellis’ recruitment before he committed to Utah, “Nebraska, Michigan State, Arkansas, and Louisville” he said. “With the other schools I was building great relationships with the coaches and I’m really grateful for them recruiting me, but Utah just checked off all of the boxes for me in what I was looking for in a school.”

Costelli has committed to Utah very early in the process but let Ute Nation know that, “I’m 100% shut down and I am gonna be a Ute”. He also added, “I am planning on early enrollment and will be on campus come January.”

The four-star Orange County product still has his senior season to play before starting his college career in Salt Lake City, Utah. Costelli has some goals set forth for himself as well as his teammates, “Playing wise I just want to get in touch with my mental game and helping out the offense as much as possible to get put in the right situation against the defense” he said. Now with his teammates, “The ultimate goal for the season is to go all the way and win a national championship.” Those are some solid goals for a quarterback more than willing to get that done with the talent around him at Mission Viejo High School.

He also has goals set for once he arrives on campus at Utah, “Just to win as many games as possible and go to a Rose Bowl then ultimately win a National championship” he said. He also went in-depth on what he feels he can bring to the offensive scheme at Utah, “I am gonna be the best leader I can possibly be and playing wise I can throw the ball really well. Also I'm able to use my feet to get out of the pocket.”

The global pandemic of COVID-19 has allowed Costelli to fully evaluate his recruiting process, “Recruiting wise it really gave me a lot of time with my parents to really sit down and talk over stuff about what we should do with visits not happening. I was also able to talk with my high school coach, Coach Johnson. He gave me really good insight and that helped when making the decision” he said. “Also just trying to throw when I can and workout when I can.”

Costelli visited Utah last for an unofficial visit October 19th for their game against Arizona State, which was a dominating win for the Utes. He plans on doing an official visit during this season, “If all goes well with this COVID-19, I will hopefully take an official visit to Utah this fall.”

Utah landed an incredible talent in four-star quarterback Peter Costelli who is thrilled and excited for the opportunity to be able to suit up for the Utes. This is a quarterback that brings multiple attributes to his game who will thrive with his type of skill set in Utah’s offense and in the Pac-12.
