What it Means: Stewart Commits to Utah

The University of Utah picked up its second commitment of the weekend with the addition of hard hitting safety prospect Darrien Stewart. Stewart is a three star recruit out of Desert Pines H.S. in Las Vegas.

Stewart chose the Utes from a final four which also included Oregon, Boise State, and UCLA, though he didn't have an official offer from the Ducks. He also held offers from Washington State, West Virginia, and a number of G5 schools. Stewart is Utah's 11th commitment of the 2021 class and the first defensive back to join the group.

What Stewart Brings to the Class

Stewart is a long and rangy safety checking in at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds. He does a terrific job of tracking the football in space and being an enforcer in the secondary. He’s also a very instinctive athlete who does a nice job of diagnosing the play of pass or run. Stewart has a really wide frame to be able to add some solid weight in a Pac-12 weight room.

Stewart is a very underrated recruit who with some senior year film could see his rating with Rivals increase. He’s a very physical safety that fits the mold of what it takes to be a successful defensive back with the Utes. Expect Stewart to be a playmaker early on for Utah and he is a nice pickup out of Las Vegas.

What Stewart's Commitment Means for the Class

With only one senior defensive back on the roster this year, safety and cornerback are not huge needs for the 2021 class. This is even more true considering that this year won't count against anyone's eligibility. With Stewart in the fold as their eleventh commitment for 2021, Utah will focus their recruiting efforts on other positions, though they won't necessarily pass on another safety commitment if it is from a can't miss prospect. Utah has definite needs, but they will go with a "best available" approach as much as possible, with the 2022 NCAA recruiting uncertainty that's about to come.
