Mt. Vernons Season Opener was a Blowout

The Mount Vernon Knights season opener, at home on Wednesday, was a blow out as they scored a blistering 110 points on Gorton High School. The Groton Wolves did manage to score 50 points which was probably 25 points more than they should have had but the game was over before it began.

Power forward Sherrod Wright set the tone early with a thunderous dunk off an ally oop from point guard Jordan Lessane to start the evening off. He also showed his skills early on with strong moves to the basket. 5'10" Lessane was also effective, hitting numerous three pointers coupled with multiple steals and conversions that ran up the lead early. Senior forward, Kevin Jones, whom Mt. Vernon fans affectionately call "The Golden Child" led his team with great defensive play and put backs around the offensive boards.

Guard Ketema Brooks took the Knights into the locker room at the end second quarter, hitting a full court buzzer beater which further punctuated the impossibility of a win for Groton.

This game was clearly out of range from the opening tip-off and by the end of the second quarter, the Knights were already playing their entire bench heavy.
.
The Knights may have achieved NBA-like triple digit numbers tonight but at times, their defense was porous and Gorton took advantage, scoring quite a bit of uncontested lay-ups and shots after breaking the Knights press. Gorton, which was closer to a JV team in talent, managed to somehowget 30 points in the first half alone from the NYCHoops #4 ranked Knights. After the game Coach Bob Camino was asked as he walked to the locker room, if he was happy with Mount Vernon's defense? He responded, "Sure, they were just a little nervous. It's the first game." If this, in fact, was just The Knight's opening night jitters, Mt. Vernon is clearly going to be a force to be reckoned with this year when they play against teams in the higher echelon of talent. If not...

High scorers for Mt. Vernon were Sherrod Wright with 21 points followed by Kevin Jones with 17 points but the scoring was balanced throughout the team.

Up next, Mt. Vernon takes on Mamaroneck High School on December 10th at home.
