It's a derogatory term for idiot BYU fans. The genesis of the word is the idea that the primary function of a BYU student is to mate (equating Provo with a zoo).
i never knew that. good to learn something. crazy i didn't know that considering i grew up in mesa, az and 90% of my peers growing up were mormon and byu fans.

I know Mountain View, Westwood, Mesa, Dobson, Red Mountain very well.. Should everyone in the PAC-12 start referrig to them as Zoobs too?

Only if they behave that way. You can spot a zoob immediately. He rationalizes beyond rationality with a logic so tortured as to beg to be allowed to die and does it with a straight face. A female zoob tends to grow to roughly 500lbs and is the largest bipedal land mammal. She is never without a creamscicle in her mouth and an infant suckling her teat. When you see a gathering of zoobs it is best to avoid them, they have been known to be fatally boring and their stupidity is so malignant as to be contagious, I've seen it myself.
Incidentally, the term "zoob" is also a slang term referring to a canine's penis.

There are BYU fans, and there are Zoobs. Zoobs are in many ways no different than "T-Shirt" fans ... fans who didn't go to the school and have an inflated sense of self-worth over their program's accomplishments.
Zoobs are a different breed of cat in that they will hint, subtly or overtly, at some kind of moral superiority because of church affiliation. That's what makes them unbearable to be around. If you find a BYU fan who doesn't give a crap about any of that, they're tolerable.
You should also know that there's a different kind of Zoob out there that Utah fans must deal with -- Tater Zoobs. Those are Boise State fans. Same as Zoobs, but without the religious overtones to their entitlement.

Pat, there are also Purple Zoobs. They shoot blood from their eyes and are the zoob Texas variety.

Don't forget tater zoobs for the Boise St. variety.
However, the original zoob will always be the BYU fan living in Utah County with wife and 8 kids, who he supports through his teller position at Deseret First CU and his ever-increasing downline of Tahitian Noni agents or some other multi-level marketing scheme. He takes his family to Disenyland every summer and forces them all to wear identical BYU gear, except for the fanny pack, which only he wears as the "head of the family". His wife is strung out on anti-depressants, but it's not immoral because "she has a prescription". However, none of them will get within 5 miles of someone having a beer because they wouldn't want to be indirectly associated with someone who partakes of the devil's rum. The family goes to BYU games on Saturdays, showing up 5 minutes before kickoff and leaving as soon as the final whistle blows. They smuggle in their own food and soft drinks into the game, which in addition to the free game tickets they got from eating at the Hogi Yogi in Orem, means don't have to spend any money the entire day. After the game, the zoob spends the entire night calling into sports radio talk shows. If BYU wins, he will postulize about how BYU will be going undefeated that year, that with their current recruiting class they could string together the next 2-3 national championships in a row and that some classless Utes spilled beer on his whole family during his trip to Home Depot earlier in the day. If BYU loses the game, he will completely throw the team under the bus for "not living right on and off the field". During the winter, the zoob spends many nights watching replays of the 1984 football season on BYU TV and lobbying his wife to name their 9th child (which is on the way) Bronco Lavell.
That's a zoob.

I think I want to get zoobh8r for my license plate. I also think of zoobs as the Y fans that talk with stats. At some point or another you will have a conversation with a Y fan that afterwards had no merit in their arguments as they were based solely on stats. Example:
Y fan - "The U will never be a football team until they win a heisman and a national championship" or "Were two weeks into the season and having a winning point differential of 20; the nationl championship is ours this year!"
U fan - "what a zoob!" "Dude that guy was such a zoob"

Urban Dictionary
A derogatory term used for referencing any Brigham Young University sports team fan. The term can also extend to refer to a current or past student of BYU. Zoob is the shortened form of the word zoobie. Did you see that Zoob cry after the University of Utah beat them for the 4th straight year?

I think Ute94 also hit the nail on the head with a Zoob's propensity to join every MLM scheme available, always pushing it on their friends and family. It is a tell tale way to spot a zoob.
